Nolita is another tiny neighborhood tucked into lower Manhattan. Its name comes from its location — " No rth of Li ttle I ta ly" — and it's the hipper, more mellow version of its neighbor to the south. In fact, the singer David Bowie, who was the king of cool, used to live here with his wife, Iman.
Other celebs still cruise its streets and people watching here is a professional sport. During the day, people frequent the low key restaurants and coffee shops on its tree-lined streets.
This is also a trendy shopping district full of stylish boutiques, pop-ups, art galleries, and unique stores like the independent McNally Jackson bookstore. There is also plenty of nightlife, ranging from dive bars to upscale lounges, but this remains a quiet area thanks to its more mature population. Despite the cool factor, this neighborhood has a friendly, cozy community vibe. It appeals to families, professionals, and singles alike.
It's also the core of the Australian expat community in New York with several Australian-run businesses. One of New York's iconic pizza joints, Lombardi's has been serving the same smoky-crusted coal oven baked pizza since The area has a distinct European character at times, reminiscent of laid-back urban neighborhoods in Italy and France.
That said, both Nolita and neighboring Little Italy host popular summer festivals that draw tourists and out-of-towners. Taking up an entire city block at Lafayette Street is the iconic Puck Building. Famous residents of Nolita have included film director Martin Scorsese, who was raised in the neighborhood; the late David Bowie and his wife, Iman; and singers Courtney Love and Rihanna.
Nearby is the world-renowned New Museum of Contemporary Art. During the warmer months, pop-up street art and outdoor galleries go on display throughout the neighborhood, where exposed outer brick walls are transformed by upcoming local artists into ever-changing, colorful murals.
Because of its small scale, real estate inventory—and turnover—is lower in Nolita. Residents like to stay put. Love the simple yet delicious food here, and the affordable prices. The pancakes here are the best! There are only a few tables, so take your bagel to go and eat it in Elizabeth St Garden instead. There will be a queue snaking out the door from when they open, until the early hours of the morning. Try the SoHo Square or the pepperoni.
I am obsesssed with this new takeaway spot, direct from Cairo. Beyond Sushi is a vegan sushi shop, offering high-end, produce-driven vegan sushi in a fast-casual environment. There are a few tables and chairs if you want to dine in, but you can also do take away here.
Nolita is full of classic New York City desserts, from traditional ice cream shops, to Italian cannoli to Brooklyn Black Out cake and my personal favourite, banana pudding. Brace your sweet tooth!
This is probably a contentious opinion, but I think the best cannoli in New York are not in Little Italy, but just a bit further up the street at Cafe Belle in Nolita! The Scala family, by way of Sicily in Italy and then Brooklyn, have been serving hand-baked, authentic Italian pastries for more than 70 years.
