As the Assistant Director of Visual Storytelling for New York University, Sapna conceptualizes and creates multimedia visual stories featuring staff and students through the use of photography and video. Prior to her work in medicine, journalism, photography and video production, Sapna was a professional singer.
Her notable reports include an exclusive interview with NASA astronauts during a training mission inside Aquarius, the only underwater laboratory in the world, located at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean and accessible only by scuba diving.
Her in-depth reports after Hurricane Sandy revealed the devastating impact on area hospitals and patient care. Sapna was the only television reporter invited to travel with First Lady Laura Bush on a humanitarian mission to Haiti and Mexico City. I have featured students who spent their spring break advocating for immigrants at the border and fighting for food justice in Washington DC. They are developing new forms of recyclable materials, directing films that raise social consciousness and literally launching companies from their dorm rooms.
Any advice for new administrators? Find community outside your department as well—meeting coworkers through projects and through the AMC has been such a gift! What is your fondest memory of your time here? Shooting episodes of Pop Quiz with our student team…and convincing members of the swim team to let me interview them while they were swimming! Is there an NYU benefit or perk that you use or think everyone should know about? I learned so much in my classes: Motion design, cinematography, film studies, marketing strategy… and I have rekindled my love of nonfiction narrative writing.
Name your favorite spot on campus. The outdoor space in Kimmel has tables and overlooks Washington Square Park. We spend a lot of time at our desks and they can tell us a lot about your personality.
Show us yours! Do you have a hidden talent? I was a musical theater minor and used to be a professional singer and dancer on a cruise ship. What are you currently reading? The poetic prose and indigenous stories remind us of the beauty of our planet, the gifts it provides, and the responsibility we share.
